Travel Wisdom

Essential Tips for Your Spiritual Journey

Advice from our experienced spiritual tour guides who accompany pilgrims through India’s holy cities year-round.

👘

Dress Modestly & Respectfully

Carry a dupatta or shawl for temple entry. Avoid leather items at many sacred sites. Wear comfortable, breathable cotton in saffron, white or light colours.

🌅

Rise Before Dawn

The Ganga at sunrise in Varanasi is a transcendent experience. The Har Ki Pauri Ghat in Haridwar at dawn, when mist rises from the river, is equally unforgettable. Early rises reward enormously.

🙏

Respect Temple Protocols

Remove footwear before entering temples. Ask your guide before photographing deities. Move clockwise (pradakshina) around shrines. Silence is sacred in many sanctums.

🍃

Eat Sattvic — Go Vegetarian

Most holy cities are deeply vegetarian. Embrace the local sattvic food — it is pure, fresh, and energising. Many of the best thalis are served at dhaba stalls near ghats.

📅

Book Festival Trips 3+ Months Ahead

Varanasi on Kartik Purnima, Ayodhya on Ram Navami, and Mathura on Janmashtami fill up completely. Book early — and let us handle the darshan queue for you.

💧

Carry Sufficient Cash

Many ghats, dharmashala shops and street prasad vendors are cash-only. Keep ₹10–₹50 notes handy for offerings (dakshina) and small donations at minor shrines.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your spiritual tour package.
What is the best time to visit Varanasi for a spiritual tour?
October to March is the ideal season for Varanasi. The weather is cool and pleasant, the ghats are most vibrant, and major festivals like Kartik Purnima (Dev Deepawali), Maha Shivaratri, and the Ganga Festival all fall in this period. However, Varanasi is a city that never truly sleeps spiritually — it receives pilgrims year-round, and the Ganga Aarti is equally moving in every season.
Absolutely — Ayodhya has transformed into one of India’s most significant pilgrimage cities. The newly consecrated Ram Janmabhoomi temple is breathtaking, and the entire city has been beautifully developed along the Sarayu riverfront. Pilgrims from across the world now visit for Ram Navami, Diwali (Deepotsav), and year-round darshan. We highly recommend combining Ayodhya with Prayagraj and Varanasi for the definitive UP spiritual circuit.
Yes — we offer senior-friendly and accessibility-aware versions of all our spiritual packages. This includes vehicles with step-less entry, wheelchair assistance at major temples and ghats, slower-paced itineraries, and accommodation close to temple entrances. Many of our most loyal customers are seniors who return year after year. Please mention any mobility needs at the time of booking and we will tailor everything accordingly.
All our spiritual packages include: private AC transport with driver, accommodation (ashram, hotel or heritage property as per package), a licensed spiritual guide or pandit, darshan arrangements at major temples, Ganga Aarti viewing coordination, daily breakfast and where specified other meals, and 24/7 support. Premium packages also include a dedicated personal pandit, VIP darshan passes, Ayurvedic welcome ritual, and personalised puja ceremonies.
Our guides escort you to the sangam by boat, and arrange safe entry into the water at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati. We provide a change of clothes arrangement, towels, and a private priest for the ritual dip if desired. During Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh years, we also arrange special Shahi Snan date visits with crowd management and safe bathing areas. Safety is always our first priority.
Yes — these three cities are well-connected by train. Varanasi (Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction) connects to Prayagraj and Ayodhya by multiple daily express trains. However, for pilgrims, we recommend private road transfers for the flexibility to stop at intermediate temples and ghats along the way. We can arrange a combination of train and private vehicle depending on your preference and budget.
We recommend the Varanasi + Haridwar + Rishikesh combination for first-time spiritual visitors. Varanasi delivers the most visceral and ancient spiritual experience in India, while Haridwar and Rishikesh offer gentler, more accessible introduction to Hindu pilgrimage, yoga and Ganga culture. Our 7-day package covering all three is consistently our most popular package for international visitors and Indian first-timers alike.
We offer free cancellation up to 72 hours before your departure for most standard packages. Cancellations between 24–72 hours attract a 25% fee. Festival-date packages (Maha Shivaratri, Kumbh, Janmashtami, Ram Navami) require 7-day advance cancellation for a full refund, as these involve non-refundable advance bookings. Full terms are provided at the time of booking confirmation.

Complete Guide to Spiritual Tours in India 2026

India is home to some of the most sacred destinations in the world. The seven holy cities covered by our spiritual tour packages — Varanasi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mathura, and Vrindavan — collectively represent the spiritual heartland of Hinduism and a profound destination for seekers of all traditions. Here is everything you need to know before planning your sacred journey.

Varanasi — The Eternal City of Moksha

Varanasi (also known as Kashi or Banaras) is believed to be the world's oldest continuously inhabited city and one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) of Hinduism. Situated on the western bank of the Ganges River in Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi is a city where life, death and liberation coexist in open view. The famous Dashashwamedh Ghat is the setting for the magnificent nightly Ganga Aarti — a ceremonial offering of fire to the river goddess — which draws thousands of devotees and visitors every evening. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is the most sacred temple in the city. Nearby Sarnath, just 10 km from Varanasi, is where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, making Varanasi an important destination for Buddhist pilgrims as well.

Ayodhya — Birthplace of Lord Ram

Ayodhya, situated on the banks of the Sarayu River in Uttar Pradesh, is one of the seven most sacred cities in Hinduism and the birthplace of Lord Ram — the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu and hero of the ancient epic Ramayana. Following the historic consecration of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in January 2024, Ayodhya has emerged as one of India's most visited pilgrimage destinations. The city is home to over 7,000 temples, including Hanuman Garhi — the fortress-temple of Lord Hanuman — and the beautiful Kanak Bhavan, gifted to Sita by Queen Kaikeyi. The Sarayu riverfront has been beautifully developed, and the Sarayu Aarti in the evening echoes the grandeur of the Ganga Aarti at Varanasi. Ram Navami (the birth anniversary of Lord Ram) is the most significant festival in Ayodhya, drawing millions of devotees.

Prayagraj — The Holy Confluence

Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) is famous for the Triveni Sangam — the sacred confluence of three rivers: the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythological Saraswati. A holy dip at the Sangam is believed to wash away sins and grant moksha. The city hosts the Kumbh Mela, the world's largest peaceful gathering of humanity, every 12 years (Maha Kumbh) and every 6 years (Ardh Kumbh). The Prayagraj Kumbh of 2025 was one of the largest in recorded history. Other sacred sites include the Hanuman Mandir (where Hanuman is depicted reclining), the ancient Akshayavat (the Immortal Banyan Tree), and the Allahabad Fort built by Emperor Akbar.

Haridwar — Gateway to the Gods

Haridwar, meaning "Gateway to God," is where the Ganga descends from the mountains and enters the plains of North India. It is one of the holiest cities for Hindus and the site of the Har Ki Pauri Ghat — where the Ganga is believed to touch the earth on its descent from the Himalayas. The evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri is a profoundly moving experience, with thousands of small diyas (lamps) being released onto the river as bells ring and mantras fill the air. Haridwar is also the entry point to the Char Dham Yatra (the four sacred pilgrimage sites of Uttarakhand: Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath). The Kumbh Mela is also held in Haridwar every 12 years.

Rishikesh — The Yoga Capital of the World

Rishikesh, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas along the banks of the Ganga, is recognised by the United Nations as the "Yoga Capital of the World." It is a city of ashrams, meditation centres and spiritual learning institutions — the most famous being the Parmarth Niketan, the Swarg Ashram, and the Beatles Ashram (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ashram, where the Beatles famously stayed in 1968). Rishikesh is ideal for those seeking not just pilgrimage but spiritual practice, inner transformation, and wellness. Daily yoga sessions, guided meditation, Ayurvedic treatments, and Ganga Aarti at the Triveni Ghat make it one of the most enriching destinations for any spiritual seeker.

Mathura & Vrindavan — The Land of Lord Krishna

Mathura, approximately 145 km south of Delhi, is the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The Krishna Janmabhoomi temple marks the exact spot where Krishna was born — it is one of the most visited temples in India. The nearby Vrindavan is where Krishna spent his childhood and youth, and where the divine love between Radha and Krishna is most deeply celebrated. With over 5,000 temples — including the magnificent ISKCON Temple, the ancient Banke Bihari Temple, and the Radha Raman Temple — Vrindavan is a city of almost continuous devotional song and worship. The Govardhan Parvat, approximately 22 km from Mathura, is where devotees perform the sacred 21-km Govardhan Parikrama. During Holi, Janmashtami, and Radhashtami, Mathura and Vrindavan are absolutely electrified with colour, music and devotion.

How to Plan Your Spiritual Tour of North India

The seven holy cities are all conveniently located in northern India — connected by road, rail and in some cases air. Varanasi, Ayodhya and Prayagraj form a natural triangle in Uttar Pradesh and are easily combined in a 6–8 day tour. Haridwar and Rishikesh, located 20 minutes apart in Uttarakhand, are a natural pairing. Mathura and Vrindavan, 12 km apart, are ideally done together and can be extended with an Agra visit. The most comprehensive experience is our 12-day Complete Sacred Circuit, which covers all seven cities in a single spiritually immersive journey. India Bon Voyage handles all logistics, darshan bookings, and personalised puja arrangements — so you can travel in peace.
