Morning: Old Delhi's Heritage
Start your day by plunging into the historic heart of the city: Old Delhi. Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, this area is a labyrinth of energy. Visit Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India, capable of holding 25,000 devotees. Afterward, hop onto a traditional cycle rickshaw through Chandni Chowk. The narrow lanes are highly specialized; one street sells glittering silver, another sells wedding finery, and the famous Khari Baoli is the largest wholesale spice market in Asia. The vibrant colors and pungent aromas are a photographer’s dream.
Afternoon: New Delhi's Grandeur
Following a traditional North Indian lunch, transition into New Delhi. Designed by British architect Edwin Lutyens, this area features wide, tree-lined avenues. Drive past the President's House (Rashtrapati Bhavan) and the Parliament Building, stopping for a stroll at India Gate, a towering war memorial. Finally, explore Humayun’s Tomb, a stunning garden-tomb that served as the direct architectural inspiration for the Taj Mahal.
Evening: Return to your hotel to shake off the jet lag, or enjoy a welcome dinner at a highly-rated restaurant in Connaught Place to sample authentic butter chicken or rich paneer dishes.
Morning: The Journey South
After a hearty breakfast, check out of your Delhi hotel. The drive from Delhi to Agra covers roughly 230 kilometers via the Yamuna Expressway and takes about 3.5 to 4 hours in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle.
Afternoon: The Mighty Agra Fort
Upon arriving and checking into your Agra hotel, head straight to Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Far more than just a fort, this colossal red sandstone structure is a walled palatial city. Walk through the Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience) and the breathtaking Musamman Burj. This beautifully carved octagonal tower is tragically famous as the location where Emperor Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son, spending his final days gazing out at the Taj Mahal in the distance.
Evening: Sunset at Mehtab Bagh
To build anticipation for tomorrow, cross the Yamuna River to Mehtab Bagh (The Moonlight Garden). This perfectly aligned park sits directly behind the Taj Mahal. It offers a peaceful, crowd-free vantage point to watch the sun set behind the monument, casting glorious golden-hour reflections on the river. Before heading to bed, be sure to try Agra's famous local sweet, Petha, made from ash gourd and sugar.
Morning: A Dawn to Remember
Wake up before dawn for the undisputed highlight of your Taj Mahal tour package. Arriving at the Taj Mahal at sunrise allows you to beat the heavy crowds and the midday heat. More importantly, the soft morning light illuminates the translucent white marble, creating a mesmerizing optical illusion as the stone shifts from grayish-pink to brilliant white. Commissioned in 1632 by Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, it remains the ultimate symbol of eternal love.
Late Morning: The Ghost City
Return to your hotel for breakfast, pack up, and begin the drive toward Jaipur (approximately 240 kilometers / 5 hours). About an hour outside of Agra, make a mandatory stop at Fatehpur Sikri. Built entirely of red sandstone, this was the capital of the Mughal Empire for a brief 14 years before it was abandoned due to water shortages. Walk through its pristine courtyards and gaze up at the towering Buland Darwaza (Gate of Victory).
Afternoon: The Steps of Abhaneri
Continuing the drive, make a second strategic stop at the village of Abhaneri to see Chand Baori. This 9th-century stepwell features 3,500 perfectly symmetrical, narrow steps descending 13 stories into the earth. It is an architectural marvel designed to conserve water in the arid desert climate.
Evening: Arrival in the Pink City
Arrive in Jaipur by early evening. Check into your heritage hotel—many of which are restored palaces—and enjoy a relaxing evening.
Morning: Amber Fort
Start your day just outside the city center at the magnificent Amber Fort (Amer Fort). Perched on a rugged hill, this sprawling complex of pale yellow and pink sandstone is a masterpiece of Rajput architecture. You can ascend the hill via a jeep or an elephant ride (though ethical travelers increasingly prefer the jeep). Inside, do not miss the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), where the walls and ceilings are embedded with thousands of tiny glass mirrors that can be illuminated by a single candle.
Afternoon: City Palace and Jantar Mantar
Head back into the heart of the walled Pink City. Visit the City Palace, a complex of courtyards, gardens, and buildings where the royal family of Jaipur still resides in a private wing. Next door is Jantar Mantar, a fascinatig open-air astronomical observatory built in the 1720s. It houses the world's largest stone sundial, which is accurate to within two seconds!
Late Afternoon: Hawa Mahal & Bazaars
Stop for photos at the iconic Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds). Its five-story, honeycomb-like facade features 953 small windows designed to allow royal ladies to observe street festivals unseen. End your afternoon exploring Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar. Jaipur is world-renowned for its block-printed textiles, blue pottery, and gemstone jewelry.
Morning: Final Jaipur Discoveries
If you have a late departure flight, spend your final morning visiting the Albert Hall Museum, a stunning example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, or grab a coffee at a chic cafe in the C-Scheme neighborhood.
Afternoon: The Return Journey
Check out of your hotel and commence the roughly 5-hour drive back to Delhi. You can stop for a traditional Rajasthani lunch at a highway resort along the way.
Evening: Farewell to India
Your driver will drop you off at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport in time for your onward flight, concluding your spectacular 5-day adventure with memories to last a lifetime.
You can cancel up to 48 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.
